Two RFC/RAF squadrons were started up here. Airship station. Opened 1918. Closed 1919.
2/3 Apr 1916 Sun/Mon. At 11.00 p.m. the Zeppelin, L16, crossed the coast just north of Cresswell, headed south-west and dropped 23 bombs in the Ponteland/Stamfordham areas, a further 11 bombs were dropped at Cramlington to the east and, finally, at 12.15 a.m., 7 were dropped at Broomhill as the L16 headed out to sea near Coquet Island. None of the bombs caused any damage or casualties.
