Crow Hall (Thorngrafton)

 

Roman dressed stones were exposed by ploughing on Crowhall Farm, near Bardon Mill.  Two statues were found on the same farm some 50 years ago suggesting the site of a shrine.  There are no visible surface remains.

Sep 23    Presentment: When John Clavering, knight and sheriff of Northumberland, by virtue of a warrant, ordered Edward Hebborne, gentleman, Thomas Harbotle, gentleman, George Robinson, yeoman, George Thompson, yeoman, and Henry Smyth, yeoman, bailiffs and servants of the said sheriff, to distrain the goods of Alexander Ridley to the value of £20, they took at Whitesheiles 50 beasts, viz., cows, bullocks and heifers from Alexander Ridley f. of Whitesheiles, gentleman, whereupon Alexander Ridley, Marmaduke Ridley f. of Whitesheiles, gentleman, Nicholas Crane f. of Crawhall, gentleman, and Anne his wife, and Margaret Crane, daughter of Nicholas Crane, spinster, committed riot and assaulted the above-named bailiffs and servants and rescued the beasts. And Nicholas Crane declared that "Talbott and all the rest should kisse his arsse and yf the justices should come with a thousand men to drive away their goodes, if he (the said Nicholas Crane) had but one howres warninge he dyd not care one pine for them all". Sep 25    Presentment: Alexander Ridley of Whitsheills, gentleman; Marduke Rydley of Whitsheils, gentleman; Nicholas Crayne of Crawhall, gentleman; Anna Craine, wife of Nicholas Crayne of Crawhall; Margaret Craine, daughter of Nicholas Crayne of Crawhall and many other unknown persons to the number of 40 men and women at Whitsheils, committed riot and assaulted Edward Hebborne, Thomas Harbottle, George Robinson, George Thompson and Henry Smith, taking from them 50 cows, bullocks and heifers, and Nicholas Crayne said "that Talbot and all the rest of the justices should kisse his arse, and if the justices should come with a thousand men to drive awaie those goods that he, the said Nicholas Craine had but one howers warneing he did not care one pine for them all".
