1879 Kelly's Post Office Directory of Durham and Northumberland

ROSE HILL is a hamlet in this township, at the extreme western boundary of the county, with a station on the Newcastle and Carlisle railway, called Gilsland station.  Here is 'Mump's ha' (Beggars' Hall). formerly kept as an inn, and is the house mentioned in Guy Mannering, in which Dandie Dinmont is described as telling the news of Ellangowan's death to Meg Merrilees.  Sir Walter Scott also relates (in the notes to that work) that Margaret Teasdale, the occupant, abstracted the bullets from the pistols of fighting Charlie Liddesdale, and then caused three ruffians to pursue and attack him.  On the opposite bank of the Irthing, and in the county of Cumberland, is Gilsland spa, with chalybeate sulphur springs issuing from the rocks, which is much frequented in the summer, both on account of the springs and its beautiful scenery: there are excellent baths, hotels, and requisite accommodation.  The principal landowners are the trustees of the Earl of Carlisle.  The area is 7,969 acres; rateable value £7,471; and the population in 1871 was 347.
