John Reed Dickinson (1844-1903)

An immigrant to
California in 1879, John Dickinson became noted for hs landscapes, portraits,
and hand-tinted photographs. He was born in London, England, and settled in San
Francisco when he was 35 years old. He had studied art in London, Paris, and
Munich, and was in New York before coming to California, exhibiting at the
National Academy of Design in 1878.
Many of his paintings, often
landscapes of Northern California, were lost in the California earthquake of
1906.
