The Commonwealth War Graves Commission - Great web site to find those poor unfortunate souls who lost their lives in both wars, military and civilian alike.

 

Old Maps - A wonderful resource to find that old homestead.  Use the Address search option to find your old farm.  

 

Digital Library of Historical Directories - You can't do without this resource.  It provides free access to the English directories of old.  Find that relative that has been hidden from you.

 

The National Archives of the UK - Excellent resource!  Find your World War 1 ancestor or relative or that member of the Merchant Marine.  Use the WW1 Medal Rolls in conjunction with the Commonwealth War Graves site.

 

Christine Amsden's web site for the Yorkshire Dales.  Here you can find photos, censuses and civil marriages for towns and villages in Wensleydale,Arkengarthdale and Swaledale.

 

UKBMD A web site that lists UK county BMD web sites.

 

The Pictish Arts Society - The Border region of England was not only attacked and harried by the Scots.  The Picts also invaded Northumbria.  In the end, the Picts were conquered by the Scots and assimilated.  See also The Pictish Chronicle and Pictish Nation.  Here is a link to the University of York's ongoing archeological project in Scotland

 

Bede's World - The Museum of Early Medieval Northumbria at Jarrow.  A well constructed web site detailing the museum's recreation of Anglo-Saxon England in the time of the Venerable Bede (AD 673-735).

 

Luminarium - A great online resource for Medieval, Renaissance and 17th Century English Literature provided by Anniina Jokinen.

 

Y Gododdin - A web site where you can find the English translation of Y Gododdin, the epic poem of the battle between men from Gododdin and the English (the Angles) at Catraeth (present day Catterick in Yorkshire).

 

Ancient Lothian - A web site dedicated to the historic and prehistoric cultures of South-East Scotland.

 

Kesseler Associates - Here you can find the genealogies of all the kingdoms of the British Isles.  A very nice web site.

 

Roman Britain - Intense web site covering all things Romano-British..

 

The Northumbrian Association - A group who share the belief that Northumbrian culture must be maintained and advanced.  "In the seventh and eighth centuries, the Angle kingdom of Northumbria became the cradle of English Christianity, culture and language."

 

The Northumbrian Language Society - Dedicated to promote, preserve, research, publish and enjoy the rich dialects from Northumberland to NW Durham.  The dialects are descendants of the speech of the Angles, which have survived particularly in the Northumbrian 'burr" area.
